Night Diving in Tulamben: Why You Shouldn’t Miss It
January 23, 2026
When the sun sets over the slopes of Mount Agung and the fishermen pull their jukungs ashore, the underwater world of Tulamben transforms completely. Beneath the calm surface of Bali’s northeast coast, a new cast of nocturnal marine life awakens — revealing a side of diving few ever get to see.
At Bali Dive Resort and Spa in Tulamben, our house reef and nearby dive sites like the USAT Liberty Wreck offer some of the most fascinating night diving in Bali — safe, accessible, and packed with surprises for both beginners and experienced divers.
Why Night Diving in Tulamben Is So Special
Tulamben is already famous among divers for its easy shore entries and calm conditions. Most dives here start directly from the beach, which makes it ideal for night diving, even if you’re trying it for the first time. You don’t need to board a boat or deal with strong currents — just a short walk from the resort to the shoreline, and your adventure begins.
Our house reef sits right in front of the resort, making night diving not only safe but also incredibly convenient. You can gear up at the dive center, do a thorough briefing with your instructor or guide, and then step straight into the water. No rush, no crowds, and no stress — just you, your torch beam, and the ocean coming alive after dark.
What You’ll See on a Night Dive in Tulamben
Tulamben’s black volcanic sand is world-famous among macro photographers, and at night, it becomes a treasure hunt for rare and unusual creatures. Even divers who have explored the same sites during the day are often amazed by how different everything looks once the lights go out.
Here are some of the highlight creatures you can encounter while night diving in Tulamben:
Bobtail Squid and Cuttlefish Tiny, jewel-like bobtail squid hide in the sand by day and emerge at night to feed. Their bodies flash iridescent blues and purples as they swim through your light beam. Larger cuttlefish may also appear, hovering gracefully as they change colors in seconds.
Stargazers These strange, camouflaged predators bury themselves in the sand with only their eyes and mouth visible. Their lightning-fast strike makes them one of the most exciting finds on a night dive — a real treat for macro lovers.
Octopus and Crustaceans Tulamben’s reefs are full of nocturnal hunters like reef octopus, mimic octopus, and coconut octopus, often carrying shells or bottles for protection. You may also spot decorator crabs, squat lobsters, and cleaner shrimps glinting in the torchlight.
Spanish Dancers and Nudibranchs These colorful sea slugs are one of the main reasons photographers love night diving in Tulamben. The famous Spanish dancer nudibranch can reach the size of your forearm, undulating gracefully through the water when disturbed.
Lionfish, Eels, and Hunting Reef Fish During the night, predators take over the reef. Lionfish fan their spines as they stalk small fish, moray eels leave their hiding spots to hunt, and the entire food chain shifts gears under the cover of darkness.
Every night dive is different — you never know what you might find!
The USAT Liberty Wreck After Dark
While our house reef is perfect for relaxed macro exploration, the USAT Liberty Wreck is one of the most unforgettable night dive sites in Bali. Located just a few minutes away from the resort, this World War II shipwreck takes on a haunting beauty after sunset.
Your dive torch illuminates massive barrel sponges, coral-covered beams, and sleeping parrotfish tucked inside crevices. Schools of soldierfish and flashlight fish shimmer in the dark, while the atmosphere around the wreck feels both mysterious and peaceful.
Many divers describe it as “the same site, but a completely new world.”
Safe and Easy Shore Diving — Even at Night
At Bali Dive Resort and Spa Tulamben, safety and comfort are always our priority. Night dives here are guided by our experienced PADI professionals who know every contour of the reef and the habits of its nocturnal residents.
Because the dives are all from shore, there’s no need to climb into boats or worry about currents. Entry and exit are easy, and the maximum depths for our night dives usually range between 6–18 meters, perfect for both fun dives and training dives.
If you’ve never done any night diving before, you can even complete it as part of your PADI Advanced Open Water Course — one of the five adventure dives included in the program.
How to Prepare for Your Night Dive
Here are a few tips to make your night diving experience in Tulamben even more enjoyable:
Use a good torch (and carry a backup) — we provide high-quality dive lights for all guests.
Stay close to your buddy and communicate often with hand signals or light movements.
Move slowly — night dives are all about patience and observation.
Control your buoyancy carefully to avoid disturbing sand and marine life.
Don’t forget to look up! You might see bioluminescent plankton glowing like stars in the water.
After your dive, our beachfront restaurant is ideal for sharing stories about what you saw under the waves.
