PADI Eco Center – Leading the way in sustainable diving

February 6, 2026

At Bali Dive Resort and Spa in Tulamben and Bali Dive Resort Amed in Amed, our passion for diving goes beyond exploring Bali’s world-class underwater sites — it’s about protecting the ocean we depend on. That’s why we’re proud to be recognized as PADI Eco Centers, the highest level of environmental recognition available within the PADI community.

Bali Dive Resort and Spa is the only PADI Eco Center in Tulamben, and Bali Dive Resort Amed is the only PADI Eco Center in Amed. Together, our two resorts are committed to leading by example in responsible and sustainable dive operations across Bali’s northeast coast.

What Is a PADI Eco Center?

A PADI Eco Center is more than a dive shop — it’s a certified leader in marine conservation, sustainable business practices, and community engagement. This global recognition from Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) and Green Fins identifies dive operators who meet the highest standards for environmentally responsible diving and tourism.

To earn the PADI Eco Center status, a dive resort must meet rigorous criteria that go far beyond simply following local regulations. Each center must demonstrate consistent action across three main areas:

Ocean Conservation: Active participation in marine protection initiatives, citizen science programs, and environmental education for both divers and local communities.

Sustainable Business Operations: Responsible waste management, energy efficiency, and reducing single-use plastics both on land and during dive trips.

Community Impact: Collaboration with local stakeholders, schools, and NGOs to promote awareness and build long-term positive change.

Becoming a PADI Eco Center isn’t just a one-time achievement — it’s an ongoing commitment to the environment, verified annually by PADI and Green Fins assessors.

What It Takes to Become a PADI Eco Center

Achieving this recognition involves an in-depth evaluation of every aspect of the dive operation. From how equipment is washed and waste is managed, to how instructors educate divers about marine life interaction, everything counts.

At both our resorts, we have implemented sustainable measures such as:

Zero single-use plastic policy for drinks and dive operations.

Refillable water stations and reusable bottles for guests.

Proper waste separation in our facilities.

Local sourcing for food, materials, and staff employment.

Beach and underwater clean ups to keeo our dive sites clean.

Beyond operational efforts, the PADI Eco Center program requires measurable contributions to marine conservation and education. That’s where our partnership with MERO Foundation comes in.

MERO FOUNDATION

Our Partnership with MERO Foundation: Inspiring the Next Generation

At both Bali Dive Resort and Spa (Tulamben) and Bali Dive Resort Amed, we believe lasting change starts with education. We proudly collaborate with the MERO Foundation, a local non-profit organisation dedicated to protecting the marine environment and empowering the next generation through education. According to their website:

“MERO Foundation stands for ‘Marine Education & Research Organisation’. We aim to be one of the most important and valued research centers in Indonesia … To support and teach the local community; To implement realisation and responsibility towards the environment; To provide the younger generation with marine insight.”

Together, we organize environmental awareness programs for local children, teaching them about plastic waste, recycling, and marine ecosystems. These sessions often include fun activities like beach clean-ups, presentations, and visits to the coastline where students can see the impact of pollution firsthand.

By giving local kids knowledge and motivation to protect their environment, we help create a future where sustainable tourism and community well-being go hand in hand. Our team also regularly participates in coral restoration, reef monitoring, and beach clean-up projects, supporting both local and global conservation efforts.

Why Sustainable Diving Matters in Tulamben and Amed

The regions of Tulamben and Amed are among the most popular diving areas in Bali, famous for the USAT Liberty Wreck, colourful coral gardens, and black-sand macro diving. With more divers visiting every year, protecting these delicate marine ecosystems is essential.

The volcanic coastline offers unique biodiversity — from pygmy seahorses and frogfish to schooling barracudas and reef sharks — all of which depend on healthy coral reefs and balanced ecosystems. As dive professionals, we have the responsibility to ensure these underwater treasures remain intact for generations to come.

That’s why, as part of our Eco Center commitment, we actively educate every diver about responsible diving practices, such as:

Maintaining excellent buoyancy control to avoid coral contact.

Avoiding touching or collecting marine life.

Reducing waste and plastic use on dive trips.

Supporting conservation initiatives and local communities.

By combining world-class diving with environmental awareness, we aim to show that eco-friendly diving can be both enjoyable and impactful.
